About

My name is Matthew Daley, and I am the author of this blog. I am an historian of United States history specializing in the years from about 1865 to about 1945 (and later) with a primary set of focuses on urban, public policy, industrial, and economic subjects. I offer a variety of classes including American Urban Society, Michigan History, Research Methods in Local History, and Industrial Archaeology at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan where I am an Associate Professor of History.

I have researched McDougall off and on since 1997 and expect to eventually publish a book. In the meantime, I have published material in Nor’Easter, Minnesota History, and the International Journal of Maritime History that draws from my research. I also have spoken on a variety of McDougall subjects including his involvement with the Rockefellers, the Bessemer Steamship Company, the Riverside neighborhood, and his Collingwood, Ontario shipyard.

  1. I am Lord (George) Robertson of Port Ellen. I was Secretary General of NATO from 1999-2003 and UK Defence Secretary from 1997-1999. I received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. As my title suggests I am a native of the village (population 300) on the Island of Islay where McDougall was born. I have been doing some (very amateur) researching of the famous people from this tiny Hebridean village. They include a current Cabinet Minister (the Secretary of State for Scotland) and two Presidents of the Royal Society of Edinburgh – Scotland’s National Academy. Also a native was General Alexander McDougall one of the heros of the American War of Independence.

Your blog is therefore very interesting and I look forward to reading more about this remarkable man and his achievements.
